| Topic | Indices and Surds |
| Type | Expand and simplify surd expressions |
| Difficulty | Easy -1.3 This is a straightforward surd manipulation question requiring only routine algebraic expansion and simplification techniques. Part (i) involves basic FOIL expansion with surds, and part (ii) requires simplifying surds and rationalizing a denominator—both are standard textbook exercises with no problem-solving or insight required, making it easier than average. |

3. Answer this question without the use of a calculator and show all your working.\\
(i) Show that
$$( 5 - \sqrt { 8 } ) ( 1 + \sqrt { 2 } ) \equiv a + b \sqrt { 2 }$$
giving the values of the integers $a$ and $b$.\\
(ii) Show that
$$\sqrt { 80 } + \frac { 30 } { \sqrt { 5 } } \equiv c \sqrt { 5 } , \text { where } c \text { is an integer. }$$
