TopicFunction Transformations
TypeMultiple separate transformations (sketch-based, standard transformations)
DifficultyModerate -0.8 This is a straightforward C1 transformation question requiring only direct application of standard rules: reflection in x-axis and horizontal stretch factor 1/2. Students need to apply memorized transformation effects to three given points with no problem-solving or conceptual insight required. Easier than average A-level question.
Spec1.02w Graph transformations: simple transformations of f(x)

\includegraphics{figure_1} Figure 1 shows a sketch of the curve with equation \(y = f(x)\). The curve crosses the \(x\)-axis at the points \((2, 0)\) and \((4, 0)\). The minimum point on the curve is \(P(3, -2)\). In separate diagrams sketch the curve with equation
  1. \(y = -f(x)\), [3]
  2. \(y = f(2x)\). [3]
On each diagram, give the coordinates of the points at which the curve crosses the \(x\)-axis, and the coordinates of the image of \(P\) under the given transformation.

Figure 1 shows a sketch of the curve with equation $y = f(x)$. The curve crosses the $x$-axis at the points $(2, 0)$ and $(4, 0)$. The minimum point on the curve is $P(3, -2)$.

In separate diagrams sketch the curve with equation
\begin{enumerate}[label=(\alph*)]
\item $y = -f(x)$, [3]
\item $y = f(2x)$. [3]
\end{enumerate}

On each diagram, give the coordinates of the points at which the curve crosses the $x$-axis, and the coordinates of the image of $P$ under the given transformation.
