TopicPolynomial Division & Manipulation
TypeSketching Polynomial Curves
DifficultyModerate -0.3 This is a standard C1 polynomial question with routine tasks: verifying a root by substitution, factorising using polynomial division (given one factor), sketching a cubic with known roots, and performing a straightforward transformation. All parts follow textbook procedures with no novel problem-solving required, making it slightly easier than average.
Spec1.02j Manipulate polynomials: expanding, factorising, division, factor theorem1.02n Sketch curves: simple equations including polynomials1.02w Graph transformations: simple transformations of f(x)

4 You are given that \(\mathrm { f } ( x ) = 2 x ^ { 3 } + 7 x ^ { 2 } - 7 x - 12\).
  1. Verify that \(x = - 4\) is a root of \(\mathrm { f } ( x ) = 0\).
  2. Hence express \(\mathrm { f } ( x )\) in fully factorised form.
  3. Sketch the graph of \(y = \mathrm { f } ( x )\).
  4. Show that \(\mathrm { f } ( x - 4 ) = 2 x ^ { 3 } - 17 x ^ { 2 } + 33 x\).
